Henna is a flowering plant, commonly found in the semi-arid regions of the world. The leaves of the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis) contain a red dye molecule called lawsone, which can bond with protein. Hence, the paste of these leaves have been used by people since time immemorial for dyeing fabrics and coloring hair, skin and nails. Traditionally, henna was used to draw delicate patterns on the hands and feet. Gradually, people started using henna designs as a replacement for conventional tattoos. Unlike other types of temporary tattoos, henna tattoos cannot be made in a wide range of colors. The latter can come up with shades of reds, browns and near blacks. But beware of some henna products, which may contain harmful chemicals. Hence, it is always better to use natural henna for tattoos and body art.

The stain will last for around two weeks to one month, depending on the method of application and after-care. One of the reasons behind the popularity of henna tattoos is its temporary nature. The tattoo will fade on its own and there is no need of adopting tattoo removal. Even if you want to remove these tattoos, it is very easy, as compared to conventional ones. You don't have to sport the same design for a whole lifetime. Another reason is the lack of pain associated with the conventional tattoos, which need needles to etch the design. In case of henna tattoos, only henna paste is required.

Over time, the same shape was adapted to become a symbol of the human heart – the place in the body that was believed to be the birthplace of emotions like love and passion.

The heart symbol has been used in religious artworks, on playing cards and as the favored symbol for Valentine’s day. The symbol is simple, yet it carries complicated meanings of adoration, generosity, love, passion, desire, health, blood, lust and approval. Heart tattoos became popular in the early 1900s, when sailors began to wear heart tattoos with the word “Mum” in the center. Later, heart tattoos bore the names of wives and/or children, sometimes even a favored port. During World War II, soldiers wore heart tattoos with the name of a girlfriend or wife. The tattoos were considered lucky charms – keepsakes of loved ones that they couldn’t lose in the chaos of fighting.

Some were depicted with symbolic elements such as snakes, swords, fire or flowers. A very popular form of heart tattoo included a banner that hung across the heart with a name or motto written across it. The heart symbol is made up of two halves, usually the same size and shape. Without one half, the symbol would not be complete, so hearts represent a union or joining of two people in a relationship. They can also represent the emotional joining created when a person loves a place, idea or animal.
